Honorary Members
Pitlochry Golf Course has a long tradition of producing golfers who have
gone onto bigger golfing success throughout the decades. Some have gone
on to more modest levels than others, but Pitlochry Golf Course is very
happy to be associated with all these sportsmen and sportsLadies. Included
in this area are the following.
John Panton MBE - Pitlochry is justly proud of its famous
son who, in addition to his many achievements, earned worldwide respect
as “Gentleman John”. Born and raised in the town, he learned to play under
the watchful eye of Mr John Murray and became his assistant in 1935. In
the same year he was a semi finalist in the British Boy’s Amateur Championship
and also went on to win the Pitlochry Club Championship. With a distinguished
career continuing into the late 1960s, John Panton has a long list of
golfing success, including 3 appearances in the Ryder Cup and 7 Scottish
PGA titles. An honorary member of Glenbervie for his distinguished service
to the golf course there, John was also an honorary professional to
the Royal and Ancient from 1986 until retirement in 2006 .
Lady Heathcoat-Amory - A personal friend to the Butter
family, Joyce Wethered, as she was known before marriage, was one of Britain’s
greatest lady amateur golfers. With a history of winning 4 British Ladies
Championships, 5 English Ladies Championships and 1 appearance in the
Curtis Cup, Lady Heathcoat-Amory will be remembered as a top class player.
Through her Perthshire connections, she always liked to return to Pitlochry
to play when time permitted.
John Brydone - Although John Brydone was the Scottish
Boys’ Champion in 1947, he was to find his niche on the administrative
side of the game. Playing for the Perthshire County team for some years
he went on to serve for a total of 47 years. He was county delegate to
the Scottish Golf Union and became Chairman of the Scottish Boys’ Championship
Committee. Until 2006 he was the Highland Open Tournament Secretary and
was Pitlochry Golf Club Secretary for 32 years.
Cecil Bloice - Whilst turning professional early in
life, a return to the unpaid ranks rewarded Cecil with a Walker Cup team
place in 1985 and in 2003 he became captain of the English amateur team.
Cathy Panton-Lewis - A winner of the Amateur Ladies
British Open Championship in 1976, Cathy is now a staff PGA Professional
at The Berkshire GC. She was also involved in founding the Ladies European
Tour in 1979 and has sat on the committee of WPGA.
Margaret McCallum - In her early nineties, Margaret
is Pitlochry Ladies GC’s oldest playing member. She was afforded honorary
membership in 1991 and still manages to play a round when she can.
Neil Panton - A brother of "Gentleman John" and a part of the
Highland Perthshire, and beyond, famous Panton clan, Neil has been a member
at Pitlochry GC for well over 70 years. With his long and distinguished
relationship with the golf course Neil was afforded honorary membership in
2006 and is still competitive to this day. So much so Neil won a Pitlochry
GC matchplay knockout competition in the 2005 season after taking his
opponent in the final to the first extra hole!!
